ERDL camouflage, developed in the early 1960s by the ERDL (Engineer Research and Development Laboratory)—a research institute of the U.S. Army—was the U.S. military’s first full-fledged leaf-pattern camouflage.Initially, it was issued primarily to select elite units such as special forces, LRRP (Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol), the Green Berets, and Marine Corps reconnaissance units; however, due to its high camouflage effectiveness, it became widely adopted by regular units during the latter half of the Vietnam War.

It is also known as the prototype for the later M81 Woodland camouflage and remains a historic design that has had a profound influence on camouflage patterns worldwide to this day.
