This is a L2-B Light Zone flight jacket for the 1960 contract with both orange liner and USAF decals, a combination that only existed for a very limited time. This L2-B is a special L2-B with very nice locally made patches sewn on it, including a squadron patch.
The L2-B is a flight jacket developed for pilots of fighter planes flying at low altitudes, known as light zones. The original was the A-2 flight jacket from the WWII era. The L2-B was then adopted after the L-2 and L2-A, and was used from the 1950s until the mid-1970s. The L2-B was used from the 1950s until the mid-1970s, after which the CWU-36P and other models followed. Originally developed as a flight jacket for U.S. Air Force pilots, it was also used by Army helicopter pilots as well as Air Force pilots during the Vietnam War, and has played an active role across branches. Unlike the MA-1 of the same model, this jacket is lightweight and is not intended for use at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, so we recommend that you wear it inside if you plan to wear it in cold weather. By doing so, you can enjoy it without any problems.
The Squadron patch is sewn on the back, The 81st Fighter Wing was a unit of the U.S. Air Force stationed at Bentworth Air Force Base near London, England, under the jurisdiction of NATO European Forces. Originally a base for the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, it was changed from the Royal British Air Force to a U.S. military base after the war and was used until 1993. The BUSHMASTERS patch on the right chest is a privately procured squadron patch for the 78th Tactical Fighter Squadron. After the end of World War II in 1945, the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing used many of the most famous fighter planes of the postwar era, such as the F-101 and F-4 Phantom, to keep the peace in Europe.
This jacket is an L2-B contracted in 1960, with an orange liner and USAF decal, an eclectic mix of the 1950s and the 1960s. It is a very rare piece with long waist ribs and locks. The wool ribs are all original with no damage to the zippers, and the hand-stitched local-made patches tell the story of the elite RAF fighter pilots who were sent to Bentworth Air Force Base in England from 1959 to 1961, when the Cold War was in full swing. It becomes L2-B. The hand-stitched name plate remains on the chest, and it is thought that personal information and rank were displayed there. The patch on the back is a very nice piece of chain stitching. The chain stitching is very European and American made. This is a very special and wonderful flight jacket. This is a used item and cannot be returned. Please understand.
